Obverse: A view of the Church of the Vow in Pietermaritzburg. Below across: “DE OUDE” and below that in arcs: “VOORTREKKERSKERK / PIETERMARITZBURG / DEC:16.1838.”. Legend on a band above: “TER HERRINNERING AAN DINGAANSDAG”, and below between stops: “IN COMMEMORATION OF (small oblique) DINGAANS DAY”.
Reverse: Within a laurel wreath tied at the foot with a bow and flanked by laurel sprigs, a scroll with eight names: “P. RETIEF. / G. MARITZ. / P. UŸS. / H. POTGIETER. / A. PRETORIUS / S. CILLIERS. / K. LANDMAN. / H. DE LANGE”. At the bottom, the maker’s name: “J SULLIVAN”. The gold medal is stamped at the top: “9CT”.
